Bookstore Z’s

December 1, 2007 by shishnit

I’ve noticed something happening to me quite often lately and so I’ve decided to just bite the big one and document the hell out of it.  Why would anyone go to a perfectly good bookstore and then zonk out in front of strangers??  Both of these people are my first 2 photographic victims.  But trust me when I say this happens to me nearly every time I’m in a bookstore.  And the person is almost always within 4 to 5 feet of me.  I decided on Thursday to just start blatantly taking their photographs with my sidekick.  And immediately just a few day’s later I nabbed #2.  This was easy of course since it happens to me constantly.  I questioned the ethical factor behind this on my part and decided that if you don’t want your photo takin in public sleeping at a bookstore, then don’t do it.  I also decided that you could never identify these people with their eyes open on the street either.  This is the equivalent of the person in front of you at the grocery store cutting coupons out of the newspaper as they are ringing up his or her order.   Rude.  I go to bookstores to browse, grab a cup of coffee, etc.  Not to listen to someone snore, and/or worse yet…drool for all to see. This lady was sawing logs right across from me at Barnes and Noble.  When she woke up she wiped the drool off her chin with a napkin.

Barnes and Noble

This below gentleman was to the left of me at Borders today, he was taking out an entire forest one wicked tree at a time.

Feel free to capture your own Bookstores Z’s.  But do…please share with me.  Surely this does not ONLY HAPPEN to ME!!!

I agree that it is less than totally tactful to sleep in a bookstore or library but then again I can completely understand how it happens. When I go into a bookstore or library I am free from responsibility. I can sit there and read and not look up and see windows that need washing, hear a phone that needs to be answered, a dog that needs to be walked etc. The serenity invades me. Nowadays bookstores are not stores anyway, the are made so comfy cozy that the scream COME CURL UP WITH A BOOK AND SOME TEA. I have no doubt that soon there will be blankets provided too.

It might sound drastic but bookstores are like a drug to me, I just want to climb inside and enjoy the ride.
