  1. Perhaps sometimes the good guy finishes first

    September 30, 2008 by shishnit

A few weeks ago Rick quit his job after he found another.  The biggest reason he did so was because of a co-worker I’ll refer to as BFF.  BFF was a jerk.  He stole tips from his co-workers and overall he was the type of guy that only looked out for himself.  Despite working for the company for 3.5 years Rick got fed up and left because of this guy.  It was a frustrating situation and while he didn’t really in his heart want to leave the company, he couldn’t tolerate this BFF guy anymore.

Today Rick’s former boss called him and asked him why he quit.  He never discussed his moral issues with this other guy and today he answered his former bosses question honestly.  He told them it was due to this BFF’s attitude and his stealing from the company ways. This guy often would tell repeat customers to call him personally and he would do the job for less himself.  This is stealing from the company.

His former boss then said, “BFF stole a $200 tip yesterday and kept it for himself. The crew returned to the same job to finish it and the customer mentioned the tip and the other guys got mad at BFF for not distributing the tip and now I have 3 guys fighting about this issue.  If I fire them all, will you come back?”

    To which Rick said, “Yes”.

Now, as to whether this will pan out is still up in the air.  We both find it hard to believe that the company will in fact do the right thing and fire 3 guys for fighting over a tip, something that is just not teamwork if you ask me, but we shall see. We don’t know if the company will do the right thing, because Rick did briefly discuss this guy’s bad behavior before and nothing was done about it in the past.  However, Rick is a quiet sort of guy and never really speaks very loudly so they may have dismissed it as no big deal.

If they do in fact fire these guys, Rick will then go back to his job with tenor and at the same pay rate.  He likes the company and the people, outside of that thief BFF.  He’s earning the same thing at his new job so his move would not be a financial decision, more of a “he likes that company” one.

For those of you paying attention, it was BFF’s wife that got arrested for theft not all that long ago.  Now it turns out that he’s a thief just like his wife.

When you work with a crew of guys and you get a tip from the customer you split that tip equally within your crew.  That’s what a moral person like my husband always does.  BFF is immoral to the core.

Someone recently insinuated that my husband surely could not be smart and be a truck driver for a moving company.  I find this to be alarming that we live in a world where we want someone to take away the garbage but we don’t want that person to be anyone we know.  People hire moving companies every day but think movers are stupid??  That’s just pathetic and small minded.  As if moving men are somehow less than.  Seriously….the world we live in is a diverse one and Rick happens to like having a job that allows him to move freely about, be outside and not be tied to a desk crunching numbers.  He actually likes what he does for a living.  There are many people who don’t.  I personally admire him for how hard he works.  I’m not married to a slob who wears a tie and I’m proud of him, how hard he works and how moral he is.

This reminds me of a co-worker I have at the University who when being an Academic Counselor told me not to marry a guy who was “only” a mover.  I did some calculations and ya know what?  I found that my husband was earning quite a few thousand dollars more than this co-worker did every year when said co-worker held a college degree.  It’s also come to my attention that movers in Florida apparently earn far more than movers in other areas because this is transient state we live in and people are in constant motion.

As the person who washes his sweat soaked work clothes, being a driver for a moving company is not easy work, however he loves what he does.  How many people LOVE what they do?  I’m always exceedingly proud of him because he busts his ass at work and that is highly commendable in my world.  I’m also not married to a fat out of shape guy….becasue he WORKS for a living.  Ahhhh a man who sweats AND has rock hard  MUSCLES….yum.

  2. I realize that since I met Rick (Jan 03) I have:

    • Not bounced any checks

    • Not had any late fees anywhere for anything

    • managed to keep money in savings once it’s deposited into savings

    • only received one late notice and that was because I paid a bill on the day it was due and the notice crossed in the mail

    • budgeted for my car insurance, therefore not been surprised by big bills

    • Moved 5 times and then…

    • Purchased a house (by myself) and my combined mortgage, insurance and taxes are coming in at only $5.46 more than our previous lease/rent amount (this will go down next year when our house officially is considered homesteaded and the taxes go down)

    • Maintained a very respectable g.p.a. while also holding down a full time job

    • Increased my personal income by 28%

    • Purchased and paid off my vehicle

    • Purchased 4 laptops…I am not easy on laptops, or else I keep getting the lemons!!

    • Received a college education for free (no, no parents paid for it and it wasn’t a scholarship and it is an accredited college)

    • Increased my horrific credit score (351 thanks to the criminal ex-husband) to it’s current 725

    • Purchased at least 500 more books since I purchase about 100 per year

    • Gained a slew of nephews and a slew of great in-laws

    • Obtained a new pet, Chloe…

    • Watched my son turn into a bright young man

    • Verbally forgiven my ex-husband

    • Stopped crying myself to sleep at night

    • a great feeling of personal empowerment

I think I’ll keep Rick.  I love you honey and could not be the person I am today without you.

  3. Love’s exquisite freedom.(live your best life; poem) – Maya Angelou

    September 27, 2008 by shishnit

I’m currently enrolled in a Human Nutrition course (midway) and I’m beginning a “Creative Writing” course on Tuesday.  As part of our required reading, this poem was listed.  This poem struck a chord with me…it is the history of love (me).   I’m glad to be taking this course when I am at a place where I can truly enjoy every stinking minute of it with the realization that I am in the final courses of my undergrad journey.

    Love arrives;
and in its train come ecstasies
    old memories of pleasure
    ancient histories of pain.
    Yet, if we are bold
love strikes away the chains of fear
    from our souls.

We are weaned from our timidity.
In the flush of love’s light
    we dare be brave
    And suddenly we see
that love costs all we are
    and will ever be.
    Yet, it is only love
    which sets us free.

  4. where’s page 63?

    September 25, 2008 by shishnit

I bought a book the other day at Target (*gasp* $11.96 expenditure!).  The book is/was “A tree grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith”.  A very sweet classic.  I read this book when I was about 13.  I recalled that I liked it then.  I decided to re-read it now.  Last night I got to page 62 and voila the following page 63 was missing and instead the pages weren’t going in exact order, something like this…

    62

    64

    66

    67

    68

    63

    70

    71

    65

    66

    72

    73

    74

    75

    76

    78

    79

    77

    63

    81

    82

    83

    84

    85

    86

    87 etc

Ok so some pages were in different places and I could have manically switched around in the book but the problem for me became the missing page 69, the missing page 80.  After 87 it appeared that all pages were in fact present.  However, I read the wrong page first and it took me a few moments to figure out what was wrong with the story line as I skipped a page, etc.  I decided to take it back to Target and exchange it.  I advised the girl at the service desk (a woman who aged in at approximately 45) that the book was missing page 69 and possibly a few others, I showed her how the pages didn’t go in consecutive order.  She glanced at me and said, “Why is it increasingly harder to find 69?”  She busted out laughing and I stood there..not quite sure what to say so I didn’t say anything.

I got another copy of the book and I’m prepared to travel back in time with Francie, such a sweet ficitional girl.
