    September 30, 2009 by shishnit

Ok I ran to CVS on my lunch break because I needed new foundation.  This is what my receipt looks like more or less.

    Pantene 2N1 Ice (12 ounces)                   4.00

    1 Axe Drk Temptations                           3.99

    1 covergirl outlast                                  7.00

I lilac purse size spray                            5.99

    1 covergirl advnc                                   10.49

    I sensdyne pro                                      4.99

    7% tax                                                2.56

                                                             39.02

THIRTY NINE dollars???  I bought a bottle Pantene shampoo/conditioner, a can of Axe body spray for Rick (love that chocolate temptations..yum!!), one tube of Cover Girl lip tint, 1 small spray .5 fl oz tube of Demeter Lilac perfume spray (yum Demeter…always yum!), 1 bottle of covergirl advanced agining foundation (I AM NOT ADVANCED AGING…or am I?), and 1 tube of sensodyne toothpaste.  So two makeup items, 1 purse size perfume, toothpaste and sexy man spray costs $39.02.

What the hell?  Ya know….what the hell??  Do not tell me I should have bought the $10 bottle of foundation and left the store.  I already know.  *sigh*  However, I need clean hair, teeth and damn it I need to look pretty and smell pretty and my man needs to smell sexy too!!!  Gah…I need to win the lottery, no?

  2. learn to copy cat that!

    September 16, 2009 by shishnit

I read a lot of blogs but few of them are really informative in terms of learning soemthing and/or also saving money.  This blog is both! I love it.

Reichel B shows some fantastic items and their cheaper copy cat versions.  When I fell for a Pottery Barn item for the first time ever it occurred to me that I might be able to find a cheaper copy cat version.  Thanks to Reichel B.!

Imagine my surprise when I checked my blog feed from her site today to see my copy cat featured.  Yes, I emailed her thanking her for her great blog and teaching me the notion of finding a copy cat for less.  Trust me, its great stuff over there.

  3. Karma….she’s a bitch.

    May 19, 2009 by shishnit

I’m a big believer in Karma. Remember Mr. Spamfuck, my former landlord who wanted to sell me his son’s house and therefore raised our rent the minute we balked at the high price of his son’s house?

Well…that house we leased for 1 year and fell in love with and were told we could buy for a mere $315,000 is now on the market for a still overpriced $169,900. Zillow says it’s worth a bit less perhaps. I have to laugh now. The landlord’s sons yellow house I rather liked….still hasn’t sold either.

Don’t remember what I’m referring to…..check old blog entry here

And here is Mr. Spamchuck’s house currently on the market for a whopping $145,500 less a year later. And irony of all irony’s….Skip is trying to sell it for him.

I love my house…I’m grateful that it all worked out for us. I truly am.  I held out for something that fit our financial plan and felt right when I walked in.  Felt right as in on all levels.  Right space, etc. I walked into my current house and knew it was right for us.  I am merely pointing out that Karma exists because these people treated us rather poorly. In the past few years each and every time someone treats me bad I just sit back and say little to nothing because Karma has a way of working things out.

Rick also bought this from Craig’s list for me for my birthday (at my request) and got a great deal. It was a birthday gift from Rick. Our TV doesn’t fit but we’re in the market for a smaller flat screen anyway. I had this mammoth TV when Keith was 4 years old. I just can’t bring myself to ditch something that’s been working all those years without a glitch. I also won it in the Big Divorce of ’03 and the ex got the little crap TV that promptly broke while moving.  (ha..Karma again!)  This is in the library.

    Armoire - Craigslist

This room used to have this little TV stand that Rick brought home for free…it worked for the purpose but had little to no storage and I was in desparate need of some more storage for so many things without a home.  Like that printer we never really use, etc.  I hate the way the big TV covers up that window…but that window faces the back patio…..and its never open anyway.  Not blocking a great view…so to speak.  The books are all hanging on the wall still…not stacked on top like it appears.

  4. $7500 Tax Credit

    January 10, 2009 by shishnit

Ok, let me clarify what my last post was about.  Two days ago my mortgage broker called me to entice me to do a re-finance.  Something we’d need the interest rates to go down to 4% to make worthwhile for us.  I’m not sure we’ll see rates go that low.

During the conversation he mentioned the $7500 Tax Credit that Rick and I qualify for.  Of course he told me a few facts about it but then I did my own research and found out that it’s not really a credit on your taxes like it sounds, it’s more of an interest free loan for the full 15 year term.  Meaning that this year we could take a $7500 tax credit and get $7500 in addition to our regular income tax refund and then each year for the next 15 years the IRS would keep $500 of our future tax refunds.    My mortgage broker brought up a few interesting things one could do with $7500 that they obtain interest free.  A money market account.  A CD investment, etc. etc. etc.

Rick and I would simply love to put that money into a savings account for emergeny purposes.  Now we already have savings and we do quite well with savings.  But the tempting thing here is that paying back this loan at a payment of $500 a year that comes out of your normal tax refund would be rather simple for us.  Almost unnoticable really.  So we could put that $7500 into an interest bearing account, pay no interest on the money whatsoever ourselves and prosper because of the front money the government is willing to give us just because we bought a house this year.

  5. no interest

    January 9, 2009 by shishnit

To my last two commenters, thank you.  Big huge thanks to Cosmic who took time to exchange a few emails with me and give me at least 3 “aha” moments of clarity, thank you very much!!

As an update to the last post, I came home that same night to find that Rick had completely overhauled the library/den/office.  He did tons of work and my heart swelled with pride.  I sat down with him and told him, ‘I was stupid, next year I want a nice gift….no matter what!’  To which I swear he said, “Ok…where’d I put my beer down?”

    Now onto other things.

If you could get an interest free loan for $7,500 from the government that you had 15 years to pay back…would you do it?  Would you do it if you didn’t need the money but only wanted to create a cozy nest egg? or invest the money?  Would you do it in light of economic hardships you see all around?  Would you do it so that you can save the money in case of strife?  Would you do it and use the money for a big vacation?  Something else?

    Please do share your thoughts.
